Adjectives - Describing Words

Adjectives are words that describe nouns (people, animals, things). They tell us more about something!

"A dog" → "A big, brown dog"
"The house" → "The old, red house"

Common Adjectives
Size:
- big, small, tall, short, long

Colors:
- red, blue, green, yellow, black, white

Feelings:
- happy, sad, angry, scared, tired

Other:
- old, new, fast, slow, hot, cold, good, bad, nice, beautiful

Where to Put Adjectives

Adjectives come BEFORE the noun in English:

- A red apple (not "an apple red")
- The big house
- My new shoes
- A happy girl

Or after "is/am/are":
- The apple is red.
- I am happy.
- They are tall.

Comparing with Adjectives

When we compare two things, we often add -er:

AdjectiveComparing
talltaller
oldolder
fastfaster
smallsmaller

Example:
- My brother is taller than me.
- This car is faster than that car.

✏️Example: Using Adjectives

Describe this picture: A cat sleeping on a sofa.

You can add adjectives:
- "A small, orange cat is sleeping on a big, soft sofa."

Or use "is":
- "The cat is cute."
- "The sofa is comfortable."
