A definition that asks a lot of us
In 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development -- the Brundtland Commission, chaired by Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland -- published a report, Our Common Future, that gave the world its most widely cited definition of sustainable development: development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
That simple sentence asks a great deal. It demands that we think not only about what we need today but about what our children and grandchildren will need decades and centuries from now, and that we balance economic development, social justice and environmental protection -- three goals that often seem to pull against one another. Nearly four decades on, sustainability is everywhere: the UN adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, corporations advertise their "sustainability commitments," and governments announce "green deals" and "net zero" targets. But how much of this is genuine transformation, and how much is what critics call greenwashing? That question runs through the whole chapter.
The pillars of sustainability and a circular alternative
Sustainable development rests on three pillars. Environmental sustainability means protecting natural resources, ecosystems and the climate so they can keep supporting life. Economic sustainability means ensuring long-term prosperity without depleting resources or piling up unsustainable debt. Social sustainability means promoting equity, justice, health, education and well-being for all, now and in the future. Several principles guide these pillars: intergenerational equity, so future generations inherit a world at least as healthy as ours; intragenerational equity, so environmental burdens do not fall disproportionately on today's poor; planetary boundaries, the nine thresholds scientists have identified that define a safe operating space for humanity; and the doughnut model, economist Kate Raworth's image of an economy operating above a social foundation of basic needs but below an ecological ceiling.
One of the most concrete ideas for achieving sustainability is the circular economy, which contrasts sharply with the dominant linear model. The linear economy follows a "take-make-waste" pattern: raw materials are extracted, made into products, used briefly, and discarded -- assuming both that resources are infinite and that the environment can absorb unlimited waste, assumptions that are simply wrong. The circular economy offers an alternative built on three principles. First, design out waste and pollution, making products that can be reused, repaired, remanufactured or recycled. Second, keep products and materials in use, building things to last, shifting from selling products to providing services, and sharing rather than individually owning. Third, regenerate natural systems, restoring soil, replacing fossil fuels with renewables, and supporting rather than undermining ecosystems. Real examples exist: some clothing companies now run "take-back" programmes that collect used garments, break them down into fibres, and weave them into new textiles. The challenge is that the circular economy requires a fundamental redesign of products, supply chains and business models, and it questions the growth model in which profit often depends on selling more, more often.
The shadow of greenwashing
If sustainability has become a marketing slogan, then greenwashing is its dark side: the practice of making misleading or false claims about the environmental benefits of a product, service, policy or organisation. The term was coined in 1986 by environmentalist Jay Westerveld, and learning to spot it is an essential skill. Greenwashing takes common forms. Vague claims use words like "eco-friendly," "green" or "natural" without evidence. Irrelevant claims highlight a minor benefit while ignoring a much larger harm -- as when an oil company promotes a small renewable project while expanding fossil fuel extraction. Hidden trade-offs advertise sustainability in one dimension while ignoring costs in others. False labels use fake certifications. No proof makes claims without verifiable data. And the lesser of two evils promotes a product as "greener" than a rival when both are destructive.
Greenwashing matters because it misleads consumers trying to do the right thing, undermines trust in genuine sustainability efforts, lets companies profit from the appearance of responsibility without real change, and -- most dangerously -- delays real action by creating the illusion that progress is being made. Examples include oil companies running advertising campaigns about renewable investments while spending the vast majority of their capital on fossil fuels, and fast-fashion brands launching small "sustainable collections" while keeping fundamentally unsustainable business models. The deeper point is that the green transition requires more than technology or clever branding. It demands fundamental changes in economic systems, political priorities and individual behaviour. The question, as the chapter frames it, is not whether such a transition is necessary -- the science is clear -- but whether it will happen fast enough and justly enough to prevent the worst consequences of environmental destruction. Critical thinking, including the ability to see through greenwashing, is part of what gets us there.
