What powers your world

Every factory, vehicle, hospital, smartphone and heated building depends on a steady supply of energy. For over a century, that supply has been dominated by three fossil fuels -- coal, oil and natural gas -- which together still account for roughly 80 percent of global energy consumption. Modern civilisation, quite literally, runs on them.

The consequences are now impossible to ignore, and a fair account holds two truths at once. On one hand, fossil fuel combustion is the single largest source of the greenhouse gas emissions driving climate change; it pollutes city air, causing millions of premature deaths a year; and competition for these resources has shaped and distorted international relations, fuelling wars and concentrating enormous wealth. On the other hand, fossil fuels powered the Industrial Revolution, lifted billions out of poverty, and enabled the modern standard of living much of the world enjoys. The challenge of this century is to move away from them without destroying the progress they made possible -- and to do so fast enough to avoid catastrophic warming.

The fuels and the power they create

Fossil fuels are energy sources formed from the remains of ancient organisms over millions of years; the three main ones are coal, oil and natural gas. They share defining characteristics. They are non-renewable -- once burned, they cannot be replaced on any human timescale. They are carbon-intensive -- burning them releases CO2, the primary greenhouse gas. They are energy-dense, packing a great deal of energy per unit, which is why they have been so economically valuable. And they are unevenly distributed, with large reserves concentrated in a relatively small number of countries, creating geopolitical power imbalances. Roughly, oil supplies about 31 percent of global energy, coal 27 percent, natural gas 24 percent, renewables including hydro about 13 percent, and nuclear about 5 percent. Key producers include Saudi Arabia, the US and Russia for oil; China, India and Indonesia for coal; and the US, Russia, Iran and Qatar for natural gas.

Norway offers a striking case study in the contradictions all this creates -- what might be called its oil paradox. Norway is often held up as an environmental leader: it has the world's highest rate of electric-vehicle adoption, generates nearly all its domestic electricity from hydropower, and has ambitious emission targets. Yet it is also one of the world's largest exporters of oil and natural gas, and its enormous wealth -- a sovereign fund exceeding 1.5 trillion dollars -- was built almost entirely on fossil fuel extraction. The country continues to issue new exploration licences, and although Norwegian producers argue their output is "cleaner," most emissions come from burning the fuel, not extracting it. In effect, Norway exports emissions: the oil and gas it sells generate roughly ten times more CO2 abroad than its entire domestic output. Supporters argue Norwegian gas can be a "bridge fuel" and that halting production abruptly would harm both Norway's economy and global energy security; critics call the position hypocritical. Environmental organisations have even sued the government over Arctic drilling licences. The paradox is not unique to Norway -- it mirrors the global dilemma.

The transition to clean energy -- and making it just

The response to all this is the energy transition: the large-scale shift from fossil-fuel-based energy systems to renewable and low-carbon sources, driven mainly by the need to cut emissions and limit climate change. It has several key elements. Renewable energy expansion means rapid growth of solar, wind and other sources to replace coal, oil and gas in electricity generation. Electrification means shifting transport, heating and industry from direct fossil-fuel use to electricity that can be generated cleanly. Energy efficiency means reducing the energy needed to power buildings, vehicles and industry. Many developing nations lack the capital to invest in renewable infrastructure. Powerful fossil fuel companies and petrostates resist changes that threaten their interests. Energy storage and grid infrastructure must be massively expanded. And crucially, the transition must be just -- it should not disproportionately harm the workers and communities that depend on fossil fuel industries, nor should it deny developing nations the chance to grow. The central question, in the end, is not whether the energy transition will happen, since the science makes clear it must, but whether it will happen fast enough to prevent the worst warming, and whether it will be managed fairly for workers, communities and developing countries alike.
