Ad Hominem attacks the character of the person rather than their argument: "You can't trust her on climate policy -- she's not even a scientist." Straw Man misrepresents someone's argument to make it easier to attack: "Environmentalists want to ban all cars and send us back to the Stone Age." Appeal to Authority claims something is true because an authority said it, even when that authority is not an expert: "This famous actor says vaccines are dangerous, so they must be." False Dilemma presents only two options when more exist: "Either we ban all immigration, or our country will be overrun." Slippery Slope argues one event will inevitably cause a chain of extreme consequences without evidence: "If we allow calculators, soon students won't be able to do any math." Red Herring introduces an irrelevant topic to divert attention: "Why worry about pollution when people are starving?" Hasty Generalization draws a broad conclusion from too little evidence: "My Norwegian friend is tall, so all Norwegians are tall." Circular Reasoning uses the conclusion as a premise: "The Bible is true because it says so in the Bible." Appeal to Emotion uses emotional manipulation instead of logic: "Think of the children!" And Bandwagon argues something is true because many people believe it: "Everyone uses this app, so it must be the best." Spotting these in real arguments takes practice -- for instance, "If we legalize marijuana, next it will be cocaine, then heroin, and society will collapse" is a slippery slope, while "You either support our military budget or you don't care about security" is a false dilemma.
The Toulmin Model and Counter-Arguments
To build strong arguments, the philosopher Stephen Toulmin offered a framework that breaks an argument into six components. The Claim is the main point you are arguing ("Schools should teach financial literacy"). The Data (or grounds) is the evidence supporting it ("A 2022 survey found that 67% of young adults cannot create a basic budget"). The Warrant is the logical bridge connecting evidence to claim ("If young people lack financial skills, it is the education system's responsibility to address this"). The Backing is additional support for the warrant when it might not be accepted. The Qualifier indicates the strength or limits of the claim ("In most contexts..."). And the Rebuttal acknowledges counter-arguments ("Critics may argue the curriculum is overcrowded; however, financial literacy could be integrated into existing courses"). Using the Toulmin model forces you to ground claims in evidence, address opposing views, and make your reasoning explicit -- producing more nuanced, persuasive arguments.
Engaging with counter-arguments is essential, and there is a right way to do it. A weak response simply dismisses the opposing view: "Some people say homework teaches responsibility, but this is wrong. Homework is just a waste of time." A strong response acknowledges, addresses, and refutes: "Proponents of homework argue that regular assignments teach children responsibility... However, this argument assumes that homework is the only effective means of developing these traits. Research by Kohn (2006) suggests that responsibility can be cultivated through age-appropriate alternatives... and Cooper et al. (2006) found no significant correlation between homework and academic achievement for elementary-aged students." The strong response acknowledges the opposing view fairly (without creating a straw man), provides specific evidence, offers alternatives, and maintains academic register. Remember too that evidence exists in a hierarchy: peer-reviewed research and meta-analyses are stronger than personal anecdotes or popularity claims. And critical thinking is not about being negative or skeptical of everything -- it is about evaluating arguments on their logical merits and supporting claims with solid evidence.
